Latin Singer Soraya Succumbs to Breast Cancer

Thursday May 11, 2006
Latin singing sensation, Soraya, has died of breast cancer in a hospital in Miami. She was 37.

Soraya was diagnosed in 2003 with stage three breast cancer. She was treated, putting the disease in remission, but suffered a relapse last year. Soraya did have a family history of breast cancer, with her mother, aunt, and grandmother all dying of the disease.

The Grammy winning artist was one of the first latin artists who recorded in both English and Spanish, setting off a trend that would be followed by JLo, Shakira and Marc Anthony. Her last album was released in 2005.

Donations in her name can be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. A public memorial will be held Friday, May 12 at Unity Park in Miami at 6:30 p.m.
