Americans Know More About American Idol than Cancer-Obesity Risk
Tuesday May 23, 2006
According to an American Cancer Society survey, Americans know more about the judges of hit show American Idol than the obesity-cancer link.
The nationwide survey showed that only 8% of people polled knew that being overweight puts a person at risk for cancer compared to the 65% of people who knew how many judges were on American Idol. The survey also revealed that most Americans are aware of the risk of diabetes and heart disease from being overweight.
Being overweight raises the risk factors for many types of cancer. Breast cancer among post menopausal women and colon cancer are more recognized types of cancer linked with being overweight.
Based on these stats, the American Cancer Society launched the 'Great American Eat Right Challenge' on May 18th. The cancer organziation challenges Americans to eat more sensibly, and "in moderation, not deprivation".
