Cannes Winner Dies of Liver Cancer

Tuesday May 30, 2006
Two time Cannes Film Festival winner Shohei Imamura of Japan, has died of liver cancer. He was 79.

Shohei Imamura's The Ballad of Narayama won at Cannes in 1973 and The Eel in 1997. Although not particularly popular in American culture, the films were successful in Europe.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter. A funeral is planned for June 6.
