1 Billion People Will Die of Tobacco This Century

Tuesday July 11, 2006
Cancer specialists have revealed an alarming statistic - one billion people may die of tobacco this century if nothing is done to reduce or eliminate our exposure to it. Several organizations such as the American Cancer Society, World Health Organization, and Centers for Disease Control have released shocking statistics in a publication, the Cancer Atlas at the International Union Against Cancer.

The most shocking stat I found was that 1.25 billion people are smokers and half will die because of it. The Cancer Atlas also stated that 5 million people die each year from cancer and other conditions caused by smoking.

What Can You Do?

If you are a smoker, now is time to quit! Remember it is never too late to quit smoking. Your body immediately reaps the benefits of being a non-smoker. If you need help quitting, see your doctor. There are several smoking cessation aids that can help you kick the habit. Also, visit About Smoking Cessation, a super site devoted to helping folks quit for good.

Avoid your exposure to second hand smoke. Second hand smoke causes many health conditions, including lung cancer.
