Michigan May Require HPV Vaccine for School Entry

Friday September 15, 2006
Michigan legislators are calling for a new bill that would require 6th grade girls to be vaccinated with the HPV vaccine for school entry. If approved, Michigan will be the first state to make the HPV vaccine mandatory to attend school.

While the vaccine will be covered by most insurances, the $300 vaccine will be available to girls without health insurance under a state immunization program.

Gardasil, the HPV vaccine, gained FDA approval in June. It protects against strains of the HPV virus that are known to cause cervical cancer. The catch is that the vaccine works best when given to young women before they become sexually active.

The HPV vaccine controversy continues to stir as many religious and family advocacy groups challege that the HPV vaccine gives young women false security about having premature and unprotected sex.

What You Need to Know About Gardasil, the HPV Vaccine

Poll: Will you allow your daughter to receive the cervical cancer vaccine?

What concerns me about this is that the vaccine just RECENTLY gained FDA approval. They thought the Lyme Vaccine was safe too until a few unfortunate people died from it and those who had undiagnosed Lyme Disease got sicker. It should not be made Mandatory. More study needs to be done and then it should be offered voluntarily with Informed Consent.
