First Lady Laura Bush Treated for Skin Cancer
Monday December 18, 2006
Although she underwent surgery to remove skin cancer over a month ago, it was just announced Monday that First Lady Laura Bush was treated for squamous cell carcinoma. Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common type of skin cancer.
The first lady's press secretary noted that Mrs. Bush suffered from a sore that was "about the size of a nickel". The sore would not heal, prompting a biopsy. The cancer was removed under local anesthetic. No further treatment is expected.
What You Need to Know About Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common type of skin cancer, next to basal cell carcinoma. 2 out of every 10 cases of skin cancer are squamous cells carcinomas. This type of skin cancer is unrelated to melanoma, a deadly type of the disease. When detected early, it can be cured.
