Thursday January 11, 2007
A team of researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health may have discovered a link between gonorrhea and bladder cancer in men. They found men with a history gonorrhea may have a doubled increase of developing bladder cancer in the future.
The team analyzed health data from over 51,000 men American men and found that 286 with bladder cancer had a history of gonorrhea. The study also found the link to be stronger in men who smoked and those with invasive bladder cancer.
What Does This Mean for Men
More studies need to be done to determine if it is gonorrhea or the symptoms caused by the sexually transmitted disease that may cause bladder cancer in men. Men should continue to practice safe sex to avoid contracting any STD, like gonorrhea. If you are a man who has previously had gonorrhea and are concerned with your bladder cancer risk, talk to your doctor. Together, you can determine your risk and how it may may affect your care.
