Parents: Here's What You Need to Know About HPV and the Vaccine
The HPV vaccine, Gardasil, protects against the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is a virus transmitted through sexual activity; no penetration is need to contract the virus. (How Do You Get HPV?) HPV is known to cause cervical cancer in women. it is also linked to several other types of cancer, like anal and vaginal cancer in women.
Gardasil protects against four types of HPV, two types known to cause cervical cancer and two types that cause genital warts. It is given in a series of three shots over a six month period. Side effects are minimal. (What are the Side Effects of Gardasil?) The vaccine is currently targeted for young women ages 11 through 26, however it can be given to girls as young as 9, under the discretion of a doctor.
