A new study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition claims that an increased intake of vitamin D may decrease the risk of developing certain types of cancer.

In the study, researchers followed 1, 179 post menopausal women in rural Nebraska. The women were divided into three groups, based on the amount of their vitamin D intake. One group took placebo pills, another group took a combination of calcium and vitamin D supplements, and final group took only vitamin D supplements.

After four years of following the study participants, researchers found that the group that took a combination of calcium and vitamin D supplements decreased their risk of developing cancer by 60 percent. The group took between 1,400 and 1,500 mg of calcium and 1100 UI's of vitamin D, about triple the recommended daily amount.

What Does This Mean For You

Before you go out and stock up on vitamin D, know that the results are preliminary and more research needs to be done. Although researchers of the study feel that the daily recommended intake of vitamin D should be boosted, you should always check with your doctor before taking any kind of supplement, including vitamins. When taken in large quantities, some vitamins can cause adverse health effects.

The urgent need to recommend an intake of vitamin D that is effective shows all the World’s Leading Vitamin D Experts agree that current recommendations for Vitamin D understate the body’s need for this substance and the recommended level needs raising substantially.
I’d be interested if anyone could produce a research paper showing doctors were any more Vitamin D sufficient than the general public. If they cannot get their own Vitamin D status optimal why do you suppose they will achieve this with their patients?
