Did You Stand Up to Cancer Last Night?
Saturday September 6, 2008
Hollywood took a break from the norm last night to raise awareness about cancer. Stand Up to Cancer aired in over 50 countries, on every national broadcast station in the U.S., and also on XM/Sirius satellite radio. The star studded event really showed that cancer affects us all, discriminating against no one. Men, women, and children of every background will be affected by cancer either through having cancer themselves or having a loved one with cancer.
You heard the personal cancer stories of both celebrities and non-famous folk and there was no difference in the stories. You could see the same pain, struggle, and survivorship strength in their words and actions. It truly made me realize that cancer is not easier for one than it is for the other. We fight the same battle; some of us win our war against cancer and others succumb.
Among last night's highlights were a duet by James Taylor and Cheryl Crow (both cancer survivors), Charles Barkley's colonoscopy, Brad Garrett's live prostate exam, and so much more. Even Homer Simpson received a colonoscopy and yes, polyps were removed!
It was a fantastic event, giving people a chance to call in to donate money to help fund much needed cancer research. If you missed out, you can visit the Stand Up to Cancer website to watch the program or through any network like ABC or NBC.

My wife and I also watched the Stand Up for Cancer telecast. It was quite moving, educational and obviously very important.
As one who has spent most of my career supporting cancer research at the University of Michigan and also thru the GOG (Gynecologic Oncology Group) I was struck by the absence of any mention of cervical or ovarian cancer research. What a great opportunity lost… what did you think? Was there a reason for the omission?
I actually discovered your blog doing research for a lecture I’ll give at an upcoming course on Basic Colposcopy.
Best wishes…
