What Risks Are Involved With a Colposcopy?

Saturday January 3, 2009
I have to be honest. When my doctor referred me to get my first colposcopy exam, I truly thought he was talking about a colonoscopy. Before I began asking questions, I wondered why exactly did they want to check my colon if there was something wrong with my cervix?

One of the first questions I asked was "What is a colposcopy?", followed by "Are there any risks associated with a colposcopy?".

Basically, I had the idea that a colposcopy was some kind of invasive procedure, but after doing my homework, I realized I was wrong. (What happens during a colposcopy?)

If your doctor has recommended you have a colposcopy because of an abnormal Pap smear, be sure to follow his advice. Do you research about the exam before your appointment. You will know what to expect and may have some questions for the doctor.
