Study Shows Men are 40% More Likely to Die of Cancer Than Women
Tuesday June 16, 2009
Interesting research hails from the U.K.'s National Cancer Intelligence Network: men are 40 percent more likely to die of cancer than their female counterparts. Even more disturbing is that men are more likely to develop cancer in the first place, according to the research. The reasoning? Bad lifestyle choices and failure to get adequate and timely medical care are to blame. The study found no biological cause that made men more susceptible to cancer and cancer death - only behavioral differences between the sexes that increased the risk.
This study comes just in time for Father's Day! It should serve as a reminder to help the men in your life be the healthiest they can be by taking care of themselves, eating right, going to the doctor when they need to, and getting the recommended cancer screening tests - like a colonoscopy and prostate cancer screenings regularly. Brushing off symptoms and not going to the doctor regularly are stereotypical male behaviors, but are common. These delays can lead to cancer being diagnosed in advanced stages, when cancer is harder to treat and has a poorer prognosis.
