Pregnancy After LEEP: Is There a Risk?

Tuesday August 4, 2009
One of the most common questions I receive from women with cervical dysplasia is how having a loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) may affect their ability to get pregnant and sustain a pregnancy.

LEEP is a method frequently used to treat high grade cervical dysplasia. Uncommonly, a LEEP may also be used to treat very early stage cervical cancer and may be used to diagnose the disease. During a LEEP procedure, a wire loop electrode with an electrical current is used to remove abnormal tissue from the cervix.

My college roomie had a LEEP 4 years ago and is pregnant w/ twins due in 09/2007. I had my LEEP two weeks ago and have been advised that it shouldn’t hurt my fertility or chances of carrying a baby to term. I hope to be pregnant soon!

i had a leep done when i was 13 years ago and has had 6 misscarriages.i was diagnosed with an incompetent cervix. i am now 32 wks pregnant with a cerclage placed at 22 wks because my cervix was unable to handle the weight of the baby. so i honestly feel because of that leep then a bopsy after really messed me up.

    (10) Jill says:

LEEPs can cause preterm labor due to a incompetent cervix. I was not aware of this and delivered at 28 weeks. If you have had a LEEP in the past 2 years of becoming pregnant push your OB to do further testing (early ultra sound to check length of cervix and possible cerclage). It may seem a hassle for the low risk of pre-term labor. But if you can avoid time in the NICU with a sick baby then it is worth it.

    (11) Kim says:

In 2002 (already had 2 kids) I had stage 4 dysplasia. I then had a biopy, colopscopy,LEEP. 3 months later it came back a stage3, so I had it all done again. I had my baby in 2006. I had difficulty dilating due to scar tissue and had to have “medical intervention” to dilate. It took me 24 hours to dilate to 10cm. My previous deliveries I dilated in 4-6 hours. It was harder but well worth it. I’m now begging my hubby for baby #4!

I have had two LEEP procedures (2001 and 2005). I am currently 11 weeks pregnant. The doctor is going to do more frequent cervix measurements and I have the potential to need a cerclage. My best friend has also had two LEEP’s and had a baby a year ago with no complications. She is 13 weeks pregnant again.

    (16) Erin says:

I had my first LEEP in 2001 and my second in 2005. I had abnormal paps every time I went to the OBGYN between these 2 LEEPS and even after the 2nd one. I also had several biopsies and colposcopys along the way. I finally started having normal paps in late 2006 and am now 18 weeks pregnant w/ my first child. My OB did a cerclage at 15 weeks because of my past history. I hope and pray that I carry my son to term or until the stitches are removed. Pregnancy can happen, you may just need a cerclage to prevent 2nd trimester miscarriages. Good luck to all!

i have always had adnormal paps which led to me having a colposcopy done twice and finally a leep back in april of this year(2007). having just turned 21 i am looking to settle down soon and was scared that i might not be able to have kids when i finally find that special someone…after reading these i am left with hope. while i am still keeping in the back of my mind the possibility that there might be a problem i know that there have been so many of you before me that have over come it!!! thank you for your strength and courage!

    (19) Jill says:

I was 28 yrs old when I had an abnormal pap come back(after many years of not seeing a MD for yearly PAP tests) and also through testing discovered I had HPV. After the biopsy I had a LEEP. It was scarry to go through it but had no realy problems afterward and just was more deligent on going for annuals. In 2004 my husband and I found out I was pregnant. My OBGYN already knew and prepared me and took all the necessary steps like more visits and measuring of the cervix and more ultrasounds. I was prepared for the worst(like miscarrage/cerclage/bed rest) but it turned out I was over due date and after inducing I could not dilate so had C-Section. My daughter and I were and are fine. OBGYN said my cervix was narrowed so no way to even put one finger through it. Now I am 6 months pregnant with my 2nd child. Planning another C-Section since OB told me no way to go vaginally due to before and cervix narrowed. So far no issues and OB is backing off this time with my restrictions(lifting/activity/sex) from last pregnancy but still monitoring with ultrasounds and visits. No issues and plan to have C-Section in late April. There is hope after this and I have had no further abnormal paps come back as well. I am a an oncology social worker and help people dealing with all forms of cancer, especially cervical, and it is always my fear it will come back. If anything I think this experience has given me some perspective and knowledge I can share and hopefully one day can make a difference in someones life, including my daughters.

Had a LEEP done end of August 2007. Found out a couple days later that I was pregnant. I had a pre-term birth at 20 weeks due to cervical incompetence. I had an ultrasound only 2 weeks before the miscarriage and everything was o.k.(cervical length). Dr. says that next time I get pregnant he will do a cerclage at approx. 12 weeks i think it was. At this point, i wish i would have demanded a cerclage. Although, i don’t think doctors really do them until you have a miscarriage. I think the miscarriage could have been prevented – but i’m not a doctor. . ..

    (22) Jennifer says:

I had a L.E.E.P. done when I was 21 years old for ASCUS cells on my cervix. Almost exactly a year later I found out I was pregnant. I had no complications during my pregnancy, and delivered a healthy 8 lb 5 oz baby boy on his due date! Two and a half years later I had another healthy baby boy, also born on his due date, with no complications!

I am currently going through the abnormal cells all over again. I have been giving the option to have a L.E.E.P. or cryotherapy, but am going to wait another 3 months to see if my next Pap comes back normal. (this is the second time in a year it has been abnormal, and I have also had a colposcopy within this same year). I am hopeful that even if I have to have another L.E.E.P. that I will have the same success as with my first two pregnancies the next time.

    (23) Erica says:

I had severe dysplasia in 2002 not caused by HPV and then had a colposcopy and LEEP done. I got pregnant eight months later and although my doctor had my history I never put the two together. Dumb sounding, but with being pregnant I had a lot on my mind. Anyway, the pregnancy was fairly normal, I had placental problems and he stopped growing in the eighth month, not sure if LEEP was cause, but I had to be induced and then I only dialated to three and would go no further. Eventually, due to baby’s heart rate I had an emergency c-section. I never would have thought the LEEP was to blame until now. I am researching cause here I am six years later and going to have another LEEP, I am very worried about the effect on future pregnancy.

    (24) Amanda says:

I had a LEEP Procedure in 2002, and got pregnant in 2005. I lost this baby at 16 weeks, due to a subchorionic hematoma. It wasn’t until this year, 2008, that it was even brought to my attention that this LEEP may have been a contributing factor to my sons death. My only wish is that I would have had this knowledge prior to the procedure.

    (28) Heather says:

    Hi,

I had a Leep procedure in 1998 and again in 2001. I got pregnant in 2006 and after 41 weeks I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. The only problems I had becuase of the Leep were that I just didnt dilate as quickly as I should because of the scar tissue, so I had a long, drawnout painful labor. Still it was worth it in the end to hold my daughter. My daughter is now 8 months old, and i´m 2 months pregnant with my second child so the procedure certainly didnt have an affect on my fertility.

    Good luck to you all,

I am going to get the LEEP procedure on Monday. My doctor says that there is not alot of cells on my cervix to remove so the scaring will be quite small.
Like so many of you, I am worried of the future results of falling pregnant. I recently just got married and my husband and I have been talking about having children in the next 2 years. I literally think of being pregnant every second and now knowing some of the risks of LEEP I think about it even more. I do hope that when we are both ready, I can come back here and give a good report like everyone else.

Thanks for posting and giving hope.

    (32) Gina says:

My husband and I had finally decided to begin trying to start a family when my pap came back abnormal. I couldn’t believe my luck because in all the years prior, my paps had always been normal. After a biopsy, it was determined that I had moderate-severe dysplasia. I had a LEEP in Oct. of 2006. I then had a normal repeat pap 3 months later. In Jan. 2007, I became pregnant. My doctor kept an eye on things and my pregnancy went fine. I did deliver 4 weeks early and my labor went extremely quick (due to my cervix thinning-my dr. said was a result of the LEEP), but I gave birth to a 6 1/2lb. healthy baby girl. Since my LEEP, I have had 3 noraml paps, but I am scheduled for another in a couple weeks, so I am praying and keeping my fingers crossed…we hope for more children in the future as well…

    (34) Michelle says:

I had a colposcopy last July that came back with results of high grade pre-cancerous cells. I ended up getting a LEEP Sept. 2007 and was terrified that it would prevent me from getting pregnant or carrying full term. The last thing i asked my dr before going in for the LEEP was how long afterwards she recommended to wait before trying to get pregnant and she said atleast 6 months. I ended up getting pregnant in January and am currently 15 weeks along with TWINS. I try not to worry too much and listen to the dr’s when they tell me everything should be fine but I can’t help but wonder about miscarriage constantly. The supposedly having me on a close watch and I’m scheduled for an internal ultrasound in 2 weeks but I’m scared to death that something will go wrong at some point because of the LEEP….

    (35) Nafeesa says:

I just gave birth to my second child 3 months ago and through both pregnancies have had abnormal pap results. I had a biopsy done after my second was born and my doctor determined I had mild to moderate abnormalities. Because of my pap history, my doctor decided to follow through with a LEEP. I was kinda sketchy at first, but now I am okay with the procedure. Thanks for all you hope and stories about this.My husband and I planned on waiting to have another child anyways, since our daughters are only 18 months apart!

    (37) lacy says:

After an abnormal pap at my 6 week check up after my first child, i had a biopsy and colopscopy. It showed carcinoma in situ, which means cancer “in its place.” My OB-GYN did a LEEP and was able to remove all of the cancerous cells. Two months later, I got pregnant with my 2nd child and everything went perfect. It has been almost a year now with normal paps.

    (38) Marci says:

At 23 I had LEEP performed and a month later conceived my son. Had a great pregnancy, with exception to abnormal cells and biopsy in 4th month, delivered my son without problems 3 days before due date. That was in May 2002, we’ve been trying for another baby since 2004 with no interventions. I’m going to new specialist June 2008 to begin process of why I can’t conceive as my other dr said I should with no problems. It is frustrating, but I have HOPE that I can get pregnant again.

    (39) Tracey says:

I had my colposcopy done over a month ago. It took 4 weeks for the Dr. to call with the results. I figured I was all clear since they didnt call right away. They called me last Thursday to say I have precancerous cells or “cervical dysplasia” and I need a LEEP procedure. They didnt tell me what stage of dysplasia I had. They scheduled my LEEP for Friday. They are injecting a local anasthetic and I will be awake. My main concern is that I wont be able to have children although the Dr. assured me that I will be. I already have a tilted uterus so my Dr. Said that it a minor setback. Does anyone know if the older you are minimizes your chances after a leep? I’m 26 and I’m scared that if I have the LEEP and I wait until I’m 30 to concieve that my chances will be nil. : (

    (40) Jen says:

My husband and I had been trying to get pregnant for about 5 months when I went in and got my first abnormal pap result. I had a biopsy done this month and was diagnosed with moderate-severe dysplasia. I had the LEEP procedure done today. My doctor said if the pathology reports come back okay then I should continue to try to get pregnant in about a month. Everything I have read indicates part of the follow up testing after a LEEP procedure involves a year worth of pap smears, every 3 months. Should I wait and make sure I get some normal pap results first or should I be content with his advice? I worry that the dysplasia could come back and then I wouldn’t know b/c pap smears are not usually done during pregnancy (or so my friends have told me). Any advice is appreciated!

No other reason why I should be getting this again six years later. I havent even had sex in 10 months!

I was really depresed before this and I got my results today and everything is fine except that my Dr. says there is a possibility I might have cervical cancer and she would like me to get a hysterectomy…I was really upset because I’m only 25….I looked up all over the internet and according to NYU medical the chances of it comming back in 10%…I am planning on getting pregnant in Oct. 2008 because according to studies that is the recommended time you should wait…. I am also very scared of having a miscarriage and hope everything goes fine..

i had my pap test result …abnormal cells …went for colposcopy and biopsy(same day)…result ..cin II-III…after 2 weeks i had leep (17.07.2008)…result on the tissue removed cin III involving endocervical glands (margins uninvolved)..that means that they removed all of the displastic zone…i found out this because 2 weeks and half after procedure i had severe bleeding and i went to the emergency room and they also gived me the results…today 08.08.2008 my gp called me to go in 10 days for appointment(i wonder why..i am getting all scared again)…i also asked about having babies and i whas told that there might be a posibility that the scarring to be to big and than it would be needed c-section ..or that of an incompetent cervix ..but they can take care of both and under good supervision we should not have any problems having babies ..good luck everybody!

I had a LEEP in 2000. I went on to successfully carry my daughter to 38 weeks in 2005. They induced me 2 weeks early because of her projected size. I did have to have a few vaginal ultrasounds to check my cervix. I was disappointed that they made me have the epidural. I had given birth twice before with no meds. They wanted to make sure that I would dialate. Everything went fine. We are now expecting our 4th on March 9th and plan to do it with no epidural. Just make sure you keep an eye on things and address any concerns with your doctor. Good luck to all!

    (58) Lisa Fayed, About.com Cancer Guide says:

Based on research, I firmly believe that the risks are low for women who become pregnant after having a LEEP. Unfortunately, I did suffer from preterm labor after having a LEEP because of an incompetent cervix. My cervix began effacing at 20 weeks and I found myself in the hospital 8 weeks later, eventually giving birth at 31 weeks. (Baby spent a month in NICU with immature lungs, sepsis, and a myriad of other problems – but is a very healthy 8 year old now!)

I believe women who have had LEEPs need to have their cervical length measured throughout the pregnancy as a precaution – something that was not regularly done throughout my pregnancy. Plus, now, women may be given the option of progesterone injections, which may help prevent cervical shortening. (More studies are being done).

Today we know much more than we did even 9 years ago when I was pregnant with my son. Management of pregnancy in women with previous LEEPs is much better and more options are available. I also think women are much more proactive in their healthcare and ask many more questions at their OB/GYN visits based on information they researched themselves (a great thing!!). This is so important.

Bottom line is that, yes there are risks, but they are low and so much can be done to promote a healthy pregnancy among women with LEEPs. Unless your doctor warns you not to get pregnant or that your LEEP was so aggressive that it could affect a pregnancy, I don’t think you should let it stop you from getting pregnant!

    Best of luck to everyone!

i had the leep done 15 years ago and i have had 2 miscarriages, as well it took us 1 year to conceive our daughter. i went into labor at 40.5 weeks and my cervix didn’t dilate at all after 36 hours of labor so i ended up having to have a c-section. i was not happy about this at all, and blame in on the leep.

    (60) Katie says:

I had a LEEP in 2005 and then again this past Dec 2007, with numerous colposcopies in between.
I finally had a negative screen after this past LEEP and then found out I was pregnant about a month later. (We got pregnant on the first attempt!)
The most important thing you can do if you have had a LEEP is to inform your physician and ask for cervical measurement. Without question, my OB is starting cervical measurements at 14 weeks and will do them every two weeks until I’m am cleared of the risk. (The highest risk for opening is between 14-24 weeks when the baby has more rapid growth and begins to gain weight rapidly.)
If they can determine that your cervix is shortening early, the cerclage can easily be placed and it will prevent you from having to go on permanent bed rest.
I had a friend who did not find out her cervix was dilating until 20 weeks (I don’t think this was related to the LEEP)…they did the cerclage and she went on to have a normal baby, BUT had to be on 3 months of bed rest since her cervix was opening.
    Hope this helps.

Be your own advocate! That’s the key!

I had LEEP when I ws 24 yrs old in 1993. I My husband and I began to work on having a family when I was 30. Since then I have had 5 miscarriages. I have no problem getting pregnant, It is “holding” the baby in that is issue. I will not go into details but ladies I prewarn you that if you have done and get pregnant – you tell your doctor, during his exam of your cervixe to “LIFT UP THE CERVIX AND LOCATE THE APEX!”. My doctor did not do that and hence place the cerclage at the wrong location and as the baby grew the water sac came out into the vaginal area. After saving the saving the sac and getting it back inside, I had another cerclage – but lost the baby due to infection.

I was just diagnosed with high grade severe cervical dysplasia last week- this diagnosis came at the same time my hubby and I were finally ready to begin trying for baby #2 (it took awhile to feel ready after our daughter was born with multiple birth defects 18 months ago- but she is doing great!) We are so sad to have to wait and are hoping that we are able to get pregnant fairly quickly with no complications- but it is all so scary. I don’t have my LEEP scheduled yet but I should be having it in the next month. I had never had an abnormal PAP before this one. Maggie,

    (68) Stephanie says:

My husband and me both have HPV and I have abnormal paps. My older son was born December 2005 and I had my first LEEP in January 2007 with CIN I + II. We got pregnant with our younger son and I delievered full term December 2007, the delievery was perfectly normal.
I had a colposcopy last week and I have CIN I + III now. So my doc would like to perform another leep but also told me (knowing we want another one within the next years) that my cervix would be so much thinner from the 2 Leeps, that there is a high chance or loosing the baby around the 20 week mark. So now we have to decide if we either wanne try really soon for a 3rd one (with both boys we got prenant the same months I stopped taking birthcontrol) or if we are just happy to have two healty kids and I get the other Leep done now. We haven’t decided yet and I think it still will take a couple weeks, but I wanted to let you know what my doc said and how my pregnancies and delieveries were.
And to one of the questions, my leep procedure did not hurt. I had some mild cramping afterwards but no actual pain.

    Good luck to everyone… :)

I cried so much when I got the news and couldn’t believe I was so unlucky , since success rate of the LEEP is 95%!!! Now I got to think about what I want to do. Another LEEP? I just miscarriage a month ago. Wonder if it is the pregnancy that brought back the abnormal cells? Anyone knows? I wan to get pregnant, so am not sure if I should try to conceive and only have the LEEP after I deliver a first child. *** Feeling confused& defeated***

I am 32 and had my first abnormal pap in May (ASCUS). I was pregnant with twins (later miscarried). I was told that another pap would be needed in 3 months. I had a second pap which came back as LSIL but could not rule out HSIL so a colposcopy/biopsy was done. The results came back HSIL so I have to have a LEEP next week. Like many of the women here, I am worried that I wont have children due to this. My husband and I really want to have children and I hope that this doesnt mess up our chances. Reading all of the posts gives me hope, though.

    (74) Kendra says:

I’m 25 and found out that when I was 3 months pregnant with my last child (this was last December 2007) that I have HPV and after I delivered they wanted to do a biopsy, because they said in most cases with mild dysplasia the cervix will fight it off. At my 4 week check up after my daughter was born the pap came back saying that I had abnormal cells , and they recommended a colposcopy with biopsy this time since I’m no longer pregnant and biopsy is not recommended when you’re pregnant because it may cause miscarriage. The results came back from my colposcopy, I now have moderate dysplasia and they gave the options of waiting a observing it, treatment, or an operation which they said wasn’t necessary. The treatment they recommended was to do a LEEP procedure. I had to wait almost 2 months to have the procedure. I had the LEEP procedure done last week. It was very scary for me, they went through all the risks and everything and told me its not going to be painful. When they started the procedure after grounding me out and stuff, they zapped me, I was like WTF? My husband was holding my hand and the shock was so bad HE felt it! They then , tried not to do that again, but let me tell you they did it another 2 times. They said I wouldn’t feel them doing anything either, and they ended up giving me the maximum local anesthesia, I still felt them doing it. They said that I was a rare case, and I get my results today. I’m crossing my fingers and hoping that they got it all, because I told my husband if I had to have another procedure, I was going to have an operation so I know I won’t feel it. Then after everything is all said and done, the only thing I’ll be scared of is when we want to have another child how that will affect me, you know. So on top of all that I’m suffering from PPD (post-pardum depression) so maybe with good results from the LEEP, my life can start looking up.

WHY DO I HAVE TO HAVE A CONE BIOPSY AFTER ALL THAT CRAP, THAT CONE BIOPSY IS A CONE SHAPE BIOPSY FROM THE INNER PART OF MY CERVIX HOW WILL THAT BIOPSY ALONE EFFECT ME FROM HAVING A CHILD, I HAVE 2 KIDS PRIOR TO ALL THIS BUT NOW I’M GETING MARRIED AND I BELIEVE HE WANTS TIO HAVE ONE CHILD TOGETHER. I am worried because I am young and I have no children and I am hoping that I can sometime in the future. I am so worried because when I found out I had HPV is when I was told that it was rare that it would turn into cervical cancer…and it did and now I’m being told that it’s rare for a woman to become infertile after a LEEP so I’m using my college brain here to see that I seem to make up those rare percentiles. Thus, I am terrified, if anyone has any advice I would love to here it.

Hello! I just had a Leep procedure a week ago (CIN III), it was so much easier than I thought! Its more emotional if anything, please do not worry if you have to go though this procedure. Renee, a colposcopy not bad at all, do not worry, its just uncomfortable b/c they are looking at your cervix though a microscope for a few minutes. If they feel they need to take a biopsy they will, which to be honest, can be a little painful, but very mild pain, more of just a cramping/pressure feeling that lasts a few seconds. Everything will be ok :)

I got the phone call on my 27th birthday last year that I needed a LEEP procedure done. I had already had 3 full term pregnancies with no problems, and 2 other pregnancies that were not to term but for other reasons. I had NEVER had an abnormal pap test before. I got the procedure done and was told to continue with paps every 6 months. I missed my six month mark because of work and on the 4th of July found out I was pregnant again. My gyn did another pap test because it is now routine in pregnancies and my abnormal cells were back. During the first trimester my doc saw me every 4 wks. I had to change docs part way through and the new doc wanted me to have an ultrasound and visit every two weeks alternating to check for any shortening of the cervix. At my physical last week I was fine. Yesterday my ultrasound showed my cervix had in fact begun to shorten. I have to get another ultrasound on monday and then the doctors will decide what to do from there. For a mother who has never had problems like this, my kids were all past due, this is the scariest pregnancy I have ever had. I will add another message when I get my results next week.

I had my first abnormal pap this year 5-08, and shortly after had colposcopy/biopsy at the same time and was diagnosed with severe dysplasia. In June of 2008 I had two LEEP procedures, my doctor told me after the first one I shouldn’t have to come back except for a check up and then found out shotly after he needed to do a second to go deeper. I was never informed (even after asking) about the risk of caring a baby to full term he assured me everything would be fine. In Aug. 08 I found out I am pregnant with my second child, currently 14wks and will go in to see a specialist to measure the cervix by ultrasound. My ob said they want a second opinion on how my cervix looks…. I am freaking out and hope I do not need a cerclage or anything!!! Has anyone had one?

I too have my concerns and I am definately not a doctor but from what my ob has told me sometimes it has a lot to do with how much of the cervix was removed during the LEEP. Hi,
I am 22 and recently got engaged, and look forward to having children with him. I am to have the LEEP this Thursday and am a bit terrified. I also have PSOS, so it adds to my complication of pregnancy in the future. Reading everyone’s stories has really given me a lot to think about in the future. I wanted to say thank you to everyone who posted on here, it has really given me the strength to go through this.

I am 25 and was diagnosed with High Risk HPV, had the colposcopy and biopsies done. They just called me and talk me they results were abnormal and I needed to have a LEEP done. I am engaged and we were going to start trying for a baby ASAP. Did anybody wait for having the LEEP and have a baby first? How long did they recommend before TTC? I was previously married and we had secondary infertility ( his side) and am not really looking forward to dealing with trouble getting pregnant again.

    Hi everyone,
I am 31 years old. I got mrried about 7 mo’s ago and we want to get pregnant next year. I was diagnosed with LSIL 1 and 2 and am having the LEEP procedure done tomorrow. My biggest fear is our ability to get pregnant and carry a baby to term after the LEEP. We were pregnant two years ago and I had a miscarriage, and am wondering if having had a miscarriage already before having the LEEP means I will definitely need the cerclage when we do get pregnant.

    (110) pj says:

I had a LEEP 10 years ago and have since given birth to two children. I saw a specialist throughout both of my pregnancies, starting at the eigth week. I had some complications, as women with cervical surgery are prone to placenta previa and other issues, as well as placenta abruption. I had a tear in the placenta during my second pregnancy and was on best rest for four months. Also, I was told no sex and no major physical exercise for the duration of both pregnancies.

I was considered for a cerclage, which is the closing of the cervix to sustain pregnancy, but fortunate for me, I have cervical stenosis, so the scar tissue kept my cervix closed.

However, when it came time to deliver, I was unable to dilate, as all my ability to do so was cut away by the LEEP. So, I had two c-sections.

I guess my best advice for getting pregnant after a LEEP is to ensure that your doctor is along for the ride. Make sure you get referred to a specialist for high risk pregnancies to check cervical length throughout your pregnancy and monitor the placement of the placenta. Also, be sure you partner is on board with the whole thing, because it could require numerous doctor’s visits (bi-weekly), extra testing, bed rest, no sex for more than 10 months and sometimes just strain of having to be taken care of.

I wish you well and hope thinsggo smoothly for you!

Wow !!! Everybody stories are so touching. Today is march 16 2009 and I had my LEEP done exactly 13days ago. My procedure went well but I was pregnant and miscarried before it was done. I thought maybe I would have a good chance in getting pregnant again but I’m so afraid to try. I’m worried I’m that small percent of women who can’t. I had such a bad side affect frm the Leep that I don’t ever want to go thru it again. But I will keep all u guys and your healthy babies in my prayers and hope you can pray that one day I will be able to conceive again

    (115) Rose says:

well I was told when I was 16 that I had abnormally high counts of A typical cells. I was later informed that those were just dormant cancer cells. I got pregnant with my son at 17 and gave birth just 2 months after turning 18. Shortly after my sons birth I had a colposcopy that showed the cells were changing and that I needed treatment imediately or I would end up with Cervical cancer. I had the surgery when I was 19 and am happy to report that I’ve had clear paps since my LEEP. I did have 2 miscarriages after my leep but am currently expecting my second child. My husband and I are happy becuase our last attempt at conception took us a very long time and we miscarried at 8 weeks. It had nothing to do with the surgery though as the baby had simply stopped developing. It is the most common reason for miscarriage and has nothing to do with LEEP procedures. I am 23 weeks pregnant right now and everything looks fine. My OB says that my cervix looks fine despite the fact that it is slightly shorter than normal. There was over an inch “snipped” off the bottom that was high risk and I am still fine. If you are concerned that your surgery will cause pregnancy problems than you need to take into account that stress is the number one contributer to miscarriage. If it happens it happens. Don’t concentrate on the negative. My story is certainly a positive one that I hope other women can learn from. Good luck and God bless.

Hello there! I have had 2 Leep procedures…the first one was in 2003 and the second was in 2004. I have had clear pap smears for 3 years now(continued to have low grade abnormalities for 2 years after 2nd Leep) and just recently tested negative for HPV. I am currently 14 weeks pregnant and really worried about having an incompetent cervix. My cervical length was measured by abdominal u/s at 13 weeks and it was 3.2 CM. Tech acted like this was perfectly normal, I am a little worried that it is short. Did anyone else have their cervix measured this early? If so, what was your measurement and were you able to carry your baby to term? This is my first baby and I am so worried that something will happen to him/her!! Thanks!

I had a leap done in 2000 after my 2nd son. I was told I may not carry another baby. In 2007 I had a baby girl the only problem I had with her was early contractions but she was full term. In 2008 I got pregnant again. When they did my ultra sound they saw that my cervix was short I went in for a cerclog but they told me a had no cervix and that they could not do it they said they don’t know how I carried my last baby full term with no cervix. I am now 26 weeks and on bed rest I dilated 2 center meters already hopefully I can make it to 34 weeks. Thank GOD?

    (120) Tiffany says:

I have always had normal paps, but this year my doctor decided to add the HPV test to the list of things to test. My pap came back normal, but it showed I was positive for high risk HPV. After having the colposcopy, it was suggested that I have the LEEP procedure as well.

I had my LEEP procedure done today. I did a little reading about the procedure before my appointment, but I was almost scared out of having it once the doctor told me it could cause infertility. Nevertheless, I decided it would be better to go ahead and have the procedure instead of letting my moderate dysplasia get any worse.

The procedure was almost painless (except for the shot to numb my cervix which was more like a prick). I asked a lot of questions during the procedure and even asked to see the sample that was taken. The doctor said the procedure went perfect, so I am hoping that everything was removed and I dont have to go through it again (even though it wasn’t that bad).

After reading the above comments, I feel more assured that I will be able to have children when I am ready. Thanks so much for sharing!

I found out I have high-risk HPV last month. Last week I had my first colposcopy and biopsy performed. I’m pretty sure, based on the PAP results (LSIL/low-grade) that my biopsy results will require that I have the LEEP. My husband and I want to start a family ASAP. Have any of you ladies WAITED to have your LEEP after having a baby? And if so, did your displasia get worse b/c of the pregnancy? Thanks to everyone who is sharing their stories. It’s comforting to know I am not alone…

Got pregnant again in July 2008 and had a cerclage put in at 15 weeks. Only made it to 26 weeks – cervix just couldn’t hold. Happy to say that my baby boy is doing just fine. Now I have found out that I have an abnormal pap after 10 year of being fine.

Hello everyone! I just had my L.E.E.P procedure done today. For everyone who has concerns, I can tell you I felt no pain. They gave me a local anesthesia and I was out like a light. No pain except moderate cramping which can be in comparison with menstrual cramps. I’m afraid of pain so you can take my word. Pain level 1-10 I give it zero. I don’t see any blood just a little discharge. I’m 22 yrs old. Now I am waitng the results. My bf also wants us to have a baby soon. I have other issues as well. I have huge ovarian cysts on both ovaries. I’m taking birth control to shrink them. Hopefully, god willing we will be another success story!! best of luck to you all!

    (125) Sloane831 says:

I had a LEEP procedure in 2003 at the age of 22 (don’t remember what my diagnosis was then). At that time, nothing was mentioned about any possible future issues or problems with pregnancy. I was just told it was something I had to do.

For me, the LEEP was VERY painful during the procedure. I cried because of how painful it was when they numbed my cervix with a local anesthetic. (I hate to scare people… I’m sorry.) For the following week or so, there was a terrible smell that I could smell through my clothes as the burned skin healed. I had to go for PAPs every three months after that for a year and everything was clear/normal after that.

In July 2008, I showed positive for ASCUS, but tested neg for HPV, so an annual PAP was set for this year. Had annual this month and it came back pos for LSIL, mild dysplasia. I am having a colposcopy tomorrow. I’m terrified thinking about the future pain of another LEEP and I am HOPING that I won’t have to have one. I’m not sure if my cervix is just unreasonably tender or what, because having my IUD put in Oct. 2007 was also incredibly painful, probably one of the most painful things I’ve gone through.

After finding out my diagnosis and doing research on the LEEP, I’m so scared that having two LEEPs will result in future miscarriages or Preterms when I do decide to have children. I’ve already been told that there is noticeable amount of scar tissue on my cervix from a prior LEEP. Is this normal? I really just don’t want to have a second one and have it affect my chances even more at having children one day. Here’s hoping for a success story and wishing luck to everyone else going through this as well.

    (127) alyssa says:

I had 2 LEEPS for severe dysplysia. I got pregnant 6 weeks after my second one because my Dr said it was ok. I got pregnant with twins and it was a perfect pregnancy till 18 weeks when baby a’s sac broke. My cervix was too weak to handel the weight of the babies. I had to deliver my boys. I can’t tell you what this did to me. I am suprised I made it. Do LEEPS or cones cause incompetent cervix? No, but it makes it a risk. Can you get checked every week and miss your cervix shortining? Yes, I got checked 3 days before I ruputured and I was at a 3.5. I should not of had the second LEEP until after I had them since the dysplasis was localized. Or the Dr should of told me about waiting or a cerclage. He didn’t because 9/10 you will be find. I was the exception and they are out there. He could of froze it off which gets rid of the cells but doe not shorten the lenght or hender the strenght. He wanted the OR money my insurance pays not an office visit so that’s why he did it through surgury and didn’t wait( guess he needed the money for his new practice) I have an adominal cerclage place by Dr Haney of Chicago. This will insure my cervix does not let out on my baby again. Or that I will have an infection due to a vaginal cerclage. In my opinion if you have had a severe amount of cervical lenght compermised look at a preventative vaginal or adominal cerclage. If you have had a second trimester loss from rupture of membrains or infection, these are results of your cervix opening too early. Don’t go undiagnosed and have it happen again. After my sac ruptured my cervix closed becuase the weight was lightend. My Dr told me this was a fluke that infections sometimes get in there..bull. If your pregnant a closed cervix will protect the uterus from infection. If you have IC it opens to let the infection in. it wasn’t until I got a fourth opinion I as told it was IC and the reason my cervix closed back up. After I found this out I looked into fixing it and found what works best for me. Drs don’t like to get pregnant ladies scared a million things out of our control can go on during pregnancy. But the ones we can control we should be told about, get informed, ask your Dr to do a cervix exam before your pregnant and check to see it it is flushed.hth

My daughter has been married three times and never conceived in spite of never using birth control. Last year she finally saw a Fertility Speciliast and learned she had severe Endometriosis (SP) with Cysts on both Ovaries, her tubes were blocked and she had tumors growing in and out of her uterus. I recently learned she had a miscarrage late last year (we go through spells of not talking) and I do feel badly for her as it know how it can affect young women. She is 38 and her Fertility doc told her if she was going to get pregnant, it was basically now or never. I am glad she found out all the problems she had, but she should have gone to a Fertility Specilist 10 years ago when it was apparent she was unable to conceive. I think at going on 39, any time she conceives she will probably miscarry and should look into perhaps adopting. I still love her and wish her the best, but sometimes some women just aren’t able to conceive or if they do, they go through the heartbrak of multiple miscarriages.

The point is, reading all this comments, sometimes I got with hope, sometimes I got scarry. But we are all different. our bodies are different…and each could have the problem in different areas. ONLY after the LEEP, the dr. can really tell you what is the next step.
Just remember it is all in our mind.
We all will be pregnant!!!!! I believe in God! and if something happens, is because it had to happen, but I am sure we all can be pregnant after a LEEP. gOOD LUCK!
