Maine May Be First State To Put Cancer Warnings on Cell Phones

By , About.com GuideJanuary 4, 2010

Follow me on:

To add to the debate that cell phone use causes brain cancer, the state of Maine is considering placing cancer warning on all cell phones -- much like a pack of cigarettes. While no concrete evidence suggests with 100% certainty that cell phone use does cause brain cancer, the state legislature will weigh in on the issue this month. Officially, none of the leading government/public  health agencies like National Cancer Institute or WHO endorse the theory that cell phones cause cancer. To me, it sounds like a tough sell for supporters in Maine, at least until more solid evidence is found.

Like Dr. Mehmet Oz explained on Good Morning America last month, thorough research on radio frequency waves takes a long time - about a decade or so - to gather solid information. So, right now the data we have now shows no positive link, but future studies may show something. On the flip side, they may not find an association, either.

The cell phone - cancer debate has been a hot topic for years, but recently exploded when a prominent, well respected University of Pittsburg doctor issued an eye-opening memo that warned about the dangers of cell phone use. The memo was leaked to the media, causing frenzy and panic for some.  Still, cell phone sales have not been effected. In fact, over 270 million Americans own them and the number does not appear to be decreasing. It will certainly be interesting to see how consumers react to the warning if it passes Maine's legislature. I wonder if other states will follow suit?

Sound Off! Do you think there is a danger in cell phone use? Share your thoughts in the 'Comments' section below!

We had a cell tower built by us about 6 months ago and have been sick ever since. It’s only the beginning and this issue has been covered up by the industry and government for years. They both make way to much money. have a look fullsignalmoviedotcom.

I know of three cases with brain cancer in young people under 25, great cell phone fans and users. These kids were healthy, non substance abusers, but all of a sudden fell ill to brain cancer. I know for a fact this is true as the three were related to my brother’s family in law. Ever since I don’t use a cell phone any more nor will use one in the future.

Regards.

Does living under powerlines cause cancer? Some believe so. Holding your cell phone to your head,
you are exposing your brain to some powerful radio wave transmissions. It’s no wonder your cell phone gets hot if you talk more than 30 minutes.
I know of a lady who’s sister also got brain cancer with heavy cell phone use. Why the debate goes on, why take the chance and use your speaker phone as much as possible.
Thanks

I believe it invloves both cordless phones and cell phones. My mother developed a gleoblastoma on the right side of her brain twenty years ago. She spent an awful lot of time on her cordless phone, but not a cell phone. No history of brain tumors or cancer ran in family member history. She died a year after having the tumor “debulked”.

I have only had a cell phone for four years and I would have given anything to have been able to have one sooner.I use to live in a rural are and the land line service was terrible.I had recently moved to a small town from a large one and the land service is not good,we have no other choice. I suggest, that people use a head set or a speaker phone where the phone is not touching your body.I also suggest that if your car is loaded with blue tooth radio with cell service plug in(usb), use that instead. It works through the speakers of the radio.

People have always been bombarded with radio radiation. It comes from space, radios and televisions. There is no credible evidence that cell phone radiation causes anything. If cell phones cause cancer, walkie talkies cause cancer. Every police radio would cause cancer. If one is worried about cell phones, he or she should buy an ear bud but he or she should stay away from radar installations too. Two decades ago, people felt that power lines caused cancer. That was studied and never proven. Let people worry about cigarettes and tanning beds, we know those both cause cancer.

There exists a number of filtering devices that reduce negative wave effects associated with cell phone use – Most are in the $20 price range and are like gummy bear candies (movie goers treat) that stick directly onto phones – I use two different models since they do not carry a seal of approval certification…

Well I totally think cell phones cause cancer and not only brain cancer!! Lets see, 40% of the population will get cancer and could die from it!! Everyone and their dog has a cell phone, and cell phones are only one thing that cause cancer, what about BPA, flash cooking french fries( thats a new one), there are so many cancer causing things in this world today, its scary! I am 29 years young and at 27 I had Breast Cancer!! Cancer is a problem, and I tell you my children will not have a cell phone and when my contract is up this year, thats the end of that for me too!! Anything that I can do to reduce the risks of cancer in my children, I will!! And I think that I should not only be the one looking out for my children, all children, after all they are the future and this world is too full of cancer causing elements!!

Hey I went to this site and purchased a products called the iShield. Their research shows a significant reduction of radiation of your cell phone while in use and a Live Blood analysis from a real Doctor! The direct link to the product is http://www.ihealthproducts.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=236 . I found an old discount code that still works on their site for 10% off any iShield product purchase! The code is cell09 it should still be working! Hope this helps everyone spread the word!

Well, its a radiation emitting unit. It will alter the normal functioning of the brain. This saying will always hold true that there is always the sad side effects of man’s (way) of development. However, we are trap to the trend of the day: we cannot avoid cellphones. Can we just curb the intensity or reduce the effect?

Today, a life, without cellphones is completely unimaginable.cellphones are used by everyone …even a child of 10 yrs, housewives, and even people who don’t need them…as it has become a necessity .So more and more people from all age groups has become susceptible to this type of ‘radiation risk’I've seen cases, where people who spend most of their time using cellphones suffer from severe headaches, nausea…so I think to reduce this potential risk , mass awareness is required along with ‘age-restriction’ on use of cellphones…WE TOGETHER CAN MAKE THIS WORLD A CANCER FREE PLACE ONLY IF WE TRY!

I was diagnosed with stage 4 inflammatory breast cancer. I was a pretty healthy person otherwise, and the whole thing happened rather fast.
I believe that carrying my cell phone in my breast pocket was the most important contributing factor to my cancer.
I am interested if other women are making this association. Many women carry their phone in persons right under their arm. A very vulnerable area because of the lymph nodes.

I’m writing about my Son, Rich, Rich, died from Glioblastoma Multiforme brain cancer, October of 2008. At the time, his neurosurgeon told us it was his cell phone. August 7, 2009 I found articles about a brain cancer cluster in San Diego on the SDSU campus. If you type in,” SDSU Room Haunted by Cancer,” the graduate student they are referring too, is Rich. Since this video and articles, ANOTHER brain cancer was diagnosed November of 2009. They also conviently left out the picture of a HUGE cell tower right across from Nasatir Hall on a hill. The school spokesman also mentions it is a Sprint Tower. I investigated on my own, and found out it is a HPWREN, High Performance Wireless Research Network! A backbone node to the UCSD campus! I’ve also been in contact with Andrea Boland from Maine, and she is aware of Rich’s story! EVERYONE please read your cell phone Manuals! Most of them do say NOT to put these devices up to your head or close to your bodies! No wonder there is SO MUCH cancer! CELL PHONES, CELL TOWERS and WIFI are ALL DANGEROUS!!!!! I’ve had the contact from many experts who have been trying to get this out! The telecommunications industry has kept a lot of this quiet. Please educate yourselves! February 2010 issue of, “GQ Magazine,” has a HUGE article written by Chris Ketchum! Please look it up. The, ” International EMF Collaborative Working Group,” released an article August 25th of 2009, titled, ” Cell Phones and Brain Tumors, 15 Reasons for Concern.” The BioInitiative Working Group,” and Dr. George Carlo ALL have good articles! BEWARE!

Sincerely

Virginia Farver
