Definition: The lower portion of the uterus that attaches to the top part of the vagina. It is approximately two inches long and is tubular in shape. The cervix dilates (widens) during child birth to allow the passage of a baby. It also allows the passage of menstrual fluid from the uterus. Sperm also need to travel through the cervix to reach the uterus.

The cervix, like other organs in the body, is vulnerable to cancer. Cervical cancer is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and can be prevented with regular cervical exams, such as the Pap smear. What Women Should Know About Their Cervix
