Carcinoma

Definition: A subtype of cancer that arises from epithelial cells. Epithelial cells form the linings of our internal organs, cavities, glands, and skin.

Carcinomas account for about 80% of all cancers. They can occur just about everywhere in the body. Examples include basal cell carcinoma, renal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma.

The major types of cancer are: carcinomas, sarcomas, blood or hematopoietic, and neuroendocrine.
Examples: Adenocarcinoma is a type of cancer that originates in a gland.
