Definition: A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of all or part of the uterus. A hysterectomy is done to treat gynecologic cancers and other benign conditions in women, like uterine fibroids and endometriosis. There are three general types of hysterectomies:
  • Partial or subtotal: Part of the uterus is removed, yet the cervix remains

  • Total: All of the uterus is removed and the cervix remains

  • Radical: The uterus, tissue that supports the uterus, cervix, and upper part of the vagina is removed. In some instances of cancer, the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and lymph nodes may also be removed.
When the ovaries are removed during a hysterectomy, the procedure is called a hysterectomy plus bilateral salpingo-oopherectomy.
