Definition: An individual who specializes in the fitting, creating, and painting of eye prostheses. Ocularists also educate prosthetic eye recipients about how to care for their artificial eye. In relation to cancer, eye removal surgery (enucleation) is a type of treatment for eye cancers, like ocular melanoma. Those who have undergone such surgery seek an ocularist to create a prosthetic eye.

Professional practicing ocularists must pass a national board exam to become certified, earning the title "Board Certified Ocularist" (B.C.O.). To become an ocularist, one must complete an apprenticeship under a board certified ocularist -- no education programs teach one to become an ocularist.

When seeking an ocularist, look for these credentials:

  • a member of the American Society of Ocularists
  • board certified (B.C.O) by the National Examining Board of Ocularists
