Julia Thorne, Ex Wife of John Kerry Dead at 61

Julia Throne, author and ex-wife of Sen. John Kerry has died of cancer at age 61. The mother of two, died in the home of a friend Thursday in Massachusetts.

Thorne succumbed to transitional cell carcinoma, a type of cancer. She was diagnosed in November of 2003 at the height of her ex-husband's presidential campaign.

Thorne gained notoriety in the 90's when co-wrote her first book, "You Are Not Alone: Words of Experience and Hope for the Journey through Depression,". It was followed by "A Change of Heart: Words of Experience and Hope for the Journey through Divorce," in 1996.

Thorne, who had been born into a political family, married John Kerry in 1970. The marriage lasted 18 years and produced two daughters, Alexandra and Vanessa. She later remarried.

Thorne is survived by her husband, Richard J. Charlesworth, two daughters, and two brothers. A memorial service is planned for the fall.
