Baseball great Kenny Griffey Jr. learned of his mother's
colon cancer this week, only to later find out the next day that his father is suffering from
prostate cancer.
The Cincinnati Reds star's mother, Birdie, was scheduled to have colon cancer surgery this week. No information was released as to how advanced her cancer may be.
The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that it is believed that Griffey Sr.'s prostate cancer has been detected early and no surgery may be needed at this time.
Colon and prostate cancer are bother considered to be common types of cancer in the U.S. When detected early, both are treatable.

Update: Ken Griffey Sr.'s prostate cancer was successfully treated and he is now considered to be a survivor. He now serves as a prostate cancer advocate for many charities, including the National Prostate Cancer Coalition.
Birdie Griffey's colon cancer metastasized to her brain, but was successfully treated with brain surgery. Her cancer is now in remission.
