In 2008, we were all taken by surprise when actress Christina Applegate announced that she had breast cancer. The 36-year-old's diagnosis immediately debunked the popular myth that breast cancer only affects older women. Just a few weeks later in August, Applegate revealed that she underwent a double mastectomy for both treatment and preventative measures, as she has a family history of breast cancer. Having a double mastectomy greatly reduces the risk of a breast cancer recurrence for the star.
In an interview with Good Morning America, Applegate opened up about her diagnosis, the double mastectomy, and reconstructive breast surgery. "I'm going to have cute boobs 'til I'm 90, so there's that," the Samantha Who star joked with interviewer Robin Roberts. "I'll have the best boobs in the nursing home. I'll be the envy of all the ladies around the bridge table."
Today, in December 2009, Christina Applegate is cancer-free. She remains an empowered patient, being proactive and diligent in follow-up screenings. She is also the ambassador for Lee National Denim Day, a breast cancer awareness and fundraising campaign.
