There are a few things a woman needs to be aware of prior to having a colposcopy performed. These tips may help the results come back more accurate.

Tips for An Accurate Colposcopy

  • Avoid douching ideally for 48 hours before the procedure

  • No sex for at least 24 hours prior

  • No tampons or vaginal medications for at least 24 hours prior

  • You cannot be on your period during the procedure, so be sure to schedule it around your cycle

  • Be sure to let your doctor know if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant

To make the colposcopy more comfortable, you may want to empty your bladder and bowels beforehand. Taking deep breaths and focusing on relaxation also eases the discomfort you may experience.
