What is a colposcopy?:
A colposcopy is a medical procedure performed to examine the cervix more closely. A vinegar solution is applied to the cervix, which makes abnormal cells turn white.
A colposcopy is normally performed due to abnormal pap smear results.
How is it done?:
Performed in the doctor's office, a colposcopy is very much like a pap smear. The doctor uses a colposcope (a lighted flexible tube that has a small camera or microscope) to view the cervix. The colposcope magnifies the cervix. An image may be displayed on a monitor.Is it painful?:
Most people do not feel any pain. Mild discomfort may be felt.How long does does a colposcopy take to perform?:
A colposcopy takes about 15-20 minutes to perform.Preparing for a colposcopy:
Do not douche, insert a tampon, have intercourse, use powders, or bubble bath for at least 48 hours prior to the colposcopy. Basically, do not put anything in the vagina.What happens if abnormal calls are found?:
A cervical biopsy may be performed during the colposcopy if abnormal cells are found.
