What is a colposcopy?:
A colposcopy is a medical procedure performed to examine the cervix more closely. A vinegar solution is applied to the cervix, which makes abnormal cells turn white.
A colposcopy is normally performed due to abnormal pap smear results.
How is it done?:
Performed in the doctor's office, a colposcopy is very much like a pap smear. The doctor uses a colposcope (a lighted flexible tube that has a small camera or microscope) to view the cervix. The colposcope magnifies the cervix. An image may be displayed on a monitor.
Is it painful?:
Most people do not feel any pain. Mild discomfort may be felt.
How long does does a colposcopy take to perform?:
A colposcopy takes about 15-20 minutes to perform.
Preparing for a colposcopy:
Do not douche, insert a tampon, have intercourse, use powders, or bubble bath for at least 48 hours prior to the colposcopy. Basically, do not put anything in the vagina.
What happens if abnormal calls are found?:
A cervical biopsy may be performed during the colposcopy if abnormal cells are found.
