For people with cancer, it is very important that they check with their doctor before using a neti pot. Chemotherapy makes a person vulnerable to infection, especially for the first few days following a round. The question is whether your sinus/nasal congestion is caused by allergies or by an infection that could potentially worsen rapidly. If your doctor suspects an infection, then traditional antibiotics will likely be prescribed.
Remember, when you undergo chemo, your natural immune defenses are not as high. A minor infection can quickly turn serious, so it is essential to report any symptoms to your oncologist or nurse right away.
If your doctor determines that your symptoms are not related to infection, he or she may allow you to use a neti pot. If you find that your symptoms do not improve with neti pot use, be sure to let your doctor know.
