  • Keep a healthy weight. Being overweight or obese puts you at a higher risk factor for developing esophageal cancer. In fact, if you are an obese man with esophageal cancer, your are 50% more likely to die of the disease. Weight loss is possible!
  • Don't let heartburn go untreated. Chronic heartburn raises your risk factor for esophageal cancer. If you experience heartburn often, see your doctor. There are many medications -- both OTC and prescription -- that can be taken to alleviate heartburn.
