Question: Is Pancreatic Cancer Hereditary?

My dad has pancreatic cancer. I am worried that is may be a type of cancer that is genetic. Is pancreatic cancer hereditary?

Answer: It is estimated that 10% of pancreatic cancer cases are genetic. This percentage may be related to certain syndromes that are are linked to pancreatic cancer. Such syndromes include: familial atypical multiple mole melanoma syndrome (FAMM),hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer syndrome, hereditary pancreatitis, and Peutz-Jeghers syndrome. There also research suggesting that the mutated BRCA2 gene that is responsible for breast cancer may be linked to pancreatic cancer development.
