Digital Rectal Exam (DRE)

What is a digital rectal exam?:
A digital rectal exam is an examination of the rectum. In reference to prostate cancer, the physician would be checking the prostate gland.
How is it done?:
The doctor or nurse inserts a a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum. he or she then checks the prostate for any abnormalities. The doctor may also take a stool sample.
Why is it called a digital exam?:
The term 'digital' refers to a digit, as in a finger. There is nothing electronic about the test.
How should I prepare for the test?:
No special precautions need to be taken prior to the exam.
How long does a DRE take?:
It takes about five minutes. Although it is not painful, you may feel slight discomfort. It is important to relax and take deep breaths.
Risks:
There are no risks associated with this exam.
What exactly is the doctor looking for?:
During a digital rectal exam for prostate cancer screening, the doctor is looking for lumps on or around the prostate, smoothness of the gland, swelling and tenderness.
