Melanoma can occur in places other than the skin. Behind nail beds of fingers and toes are also places that this potentially fatal type of skin cancer can develop. When melanoma develops under the fingernail, it looks like a discoloration, like blue or brown. It can be a small spot or cover the entire area like in this picture.
