Question: What are the symptoms of thyroid cancer?

Thyroid cancer is a disease that affects the thyroid gland. The thyroid is responsible for making hormones. It is located beneath the Adam's apple and is about the size of a quarter. About 25,000 new cases of thyroid cancer will be diagnosed this year.

Answer: It is important to relate that early thyroid cancer usually does not cause any symptoms at all. As the cancer advances, the patient may experience the following:

  • Pain in the neck or throat

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Trouble breathing

  • Hoarseness; may come and go or be constant

  • Swelling of the lymph nodes particularly in the neck

  • A nodule or lump in the area around the Adam's apple

  • Difficulty speaking

Keep in mind that these symptoms could be that of many other illnesses. It is important to be evaluated by a medical professional for exact diagnosis. If you are experiencing these or any other symptoms, please see a healthcare professional.
