What is an Oncologist?

An oncologist is a physician that specializes in cancer treatment. This type of doctor is familiar with several types of cancer, and may specialize in a certain type of cancer such as lung cancer or breast cancer. There are three main types of oncologists:
  • Medical oncologists treat cancer with medicine or chemotherapy
  • Surgical oncologists treat cancer with surgery
  • Radiation oncologists treat cancer with radiation therapy

What is a Gynecologic Oncologist?

A gynecologic oncologist is a gynecologist who completed three additional years of fellowship training in the treatment of gynecologic cancer. During a gyn-oncology fellowship, doctors become specialists in the surgical and medical treatment of gynecologic cancers including ovarian, uterine, cervical and vulvar cancers. He or she will manage your care plan. A gynecologic oncologist will perform surgery and administer chemotherapy. If radiation is necessary, the gyn-oncologist will work with a radiation oncologist.

Because of their specialized training, a gynecologic oncologist is ideal for women suffering from cervical cancer.

Benefits of Seeing a Gynecologic Oncologist

A gyn-oncologist is trained specially in the field of reproductive cancers. He or she may be more aware of clinical trials for women with cervical cancer. Gyn-oncologists also are multi-diciplinary, meaning they participate in all methods of treatment.

Many women who are not located near a gynecologist oncologist often seek a second opinion from one.

Should You Choose an Oncologist or Gynecologic Oncologist?

Studies have shown better outcomes for women treated by gynecologic oncologists. Location and insurance coverage may play a large role in determining which oncologist will treat you.
