How Long After Treatment Began Did You Lose Your Hair?

My hair started falling out after my second session of chemo.

Did You Lose It Gradually or Very Quickly?

It started slowly, but after two weeks it was all gone.

What Was Your First Reaction When You Noticed the Loss?

Reality. It really meant I had cancer, and that I was doing chemo, and that I would have no hair. I loved my hair it was long and healthy and my shining glory.

Were You Tempted to Shave Your Head? Did You Do It?

No I wasnt tempted, but when it started falling out I cut it quite short and died it a very bright red - a style I had always wanted to try but not willing to cut my long mane. I knew that if I didnt like the style it would be gone in a week anyway...by the way I didnt like it short and red!

Did You Choose to Wear a Head Covering or Not?

I did wear a head covering...wigs, bandanas, hats. Mainly because it was winter and you dont realize how cold you get with no hair. At home I felt comfortable about not wearing anything. But I felt ugly. You feel awful and sick and then you have no hair - anywhere on your body by the way!! One bonus is that you dont have to shave your legs for a few months. I bought 3 beautiful wigs, one for work, one for play, and one just because I wanted to try out being a blonde! When I wore them I felt great, except that they itch and get hot - especially when you get a hot flush.

How Did Losing Your Hair Affect Your Everyday Life?

Not a lot. I kept everything as normal as I could while going through treatment. Kept working, kept doing my sport, seeing my friends as though nothing was happening. It was important for me at the time to be as normal as possible. It really helped.

Advice

  • Be prepared. Go with a friend to pick out some great headwear..that way when you lose your hair you are ready.
