Patty's Story with Hair Loss Caused By Chemo

How Long After Treatment Began Did You Lose Your Hair?

14 days

Did You Lose It Gradually or Very Quickly?

Quickly

What Was Your First Reaction When You Noticed the Loss?

I went to a local salon and met with the lady that donated her time to chemo patients and helped with picking out a wig to shaving my head. She helped me from start to finish and even when it was all over and my hair was growing back she shaped it and cut it no charge until it was 4 inches long.

Were You Tempted to Shave Your Head? Did You Do It?

Yes I did. My hair was 20inches long. When I started chemo. The wig lady suggest it would be less stressful to do. Than to keep seeing big gobs of hair falling out. She cut it so that I could save it and send it to Locks of Love.

Did You Choose to Wear a Head Covering or Not?

Yes, I had a long wig that looked just like my hair did. Just a little shorter. I made fun of looking for new wigs. I ended up with 4 wigs that I would switch back and forth.

How Did Losing Your Hair Affect Your Everyday Life?

The only thing I was alway nervous about was that the wind would take my wig..on a windy day. Most people never even knew I had a bald head. I liked it like that. I wanted to live a normal life even though I was going though chemo. It wasnt going to take me down. I never missed a day of work and I am proud of that. Losing my eyebrows and eyelashes was devistating. For 3 years after chemo. My eyelashes and eyebrows would grow back and then fall out. That was depressing.

Advice

  • Everyone is different and has different feelings. I will say do as you feel. I was thankful for the women at the salon that helped me through it all. She has been there for hundreds of chemo patients male and female. If you can find someone like that I highly recommend you go to them. My advice is to stay strong and positive and live your life to the fullest every day. I have my 6th year cancer free coming in August. I am thankful to be alive and still living and loving everything about life here on earth. Oh ya I pray and mediate a lot. Peace and Love, Patty
