How Has Having Cancer Changed Your Life?

when i found out i had cancer my spoken words were "lets get rid of it" I decided to go back to college and presently am studying to be a sign language interpreter

What Type of Cancer Did You Have?

I had breast cancer and had a full mastectomy

How long did you undergo treatment?

after my surgery, I had many tests to make sure I was healthy enough to take the chemotherapy and/or radiation. I was told chemo would do the trick along w/ the mastectomy. I was given my chemo every 3rd thursday and then on friday would go to get a booster shot to rebuild my blood cells "Neulasta" it made my whole body hurt because it made my bones go into overdrive producing blood cells I had 3 treatments and stopped my chemo. I had a pet scan, my body was free of cancer but so weak and sore and tired I chose to stop the treatments. The dr. was not happy but 5 years later I am still here and realitively healthy

Advice

  • do what the dr. tells you but be smart get to know your own body
  • your body will tell you when something is not right
  • have free will and learn to laugh NO MATTER WHAT
  • you are your bodies boss only you can tell it what to do
  • have an open mind and a good sense of humor
  • eat and sleep as much as possible
  • take your meds when told to do so
  • go for all of your appointments even if they seem repetitious
  • have a good rapore with your cancer team make sure you understand everything they are doing for and to you
  • try to be brave and it will get better
